Microsoft Names Asha Sharma to Lead Xbox
Microsoft ($MSFT) has appointed AI executive Asha Sharma to head its Xbox and gaming business, taking over from Phil Spencer, who is set to retire. This move marks a renewed commitment to console users after several years of focusing on mobile and PC gamers.
Leadership Changes at Xbox
Phil Spencer has been at the helm of the Xbox division since 2014 and was named gaming CEO in 2022. Alongside Spencer, Xbox President Sarah Bond will also depart. Matt Booty, who leads Xbox Game Studios, will transition to the role of Chief Content Officer, reporting directly to Sharma.
Sharma’s Background
Asha Sharma, who has previously held significant roles at Instacart and Meta Platforms Inc., was selected for her expertise in consumer engagement. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shared this news in a blog post, emphasizing Sharma's experience and vision for the future of gaming within the company.
Recommitting to Core Xbox Fans
Over recent years, Microsoft has shifted its focus to expand beyond its traditional console audience, acquiring companies like Activision Blizzard Inc. for $69 billion. However, this strategy has alienated long-time Xbox fans, particularly as the mobile gaming market has slowed and Microsoft's plans have faced setbacks.
Since 2024, Microsoft has laid off over 2,500 employees in the gaming division and has closed several studios, including Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks. Additionally, some long-developed games were canceled, leading to frustration among gamers, especially with the decision to bring major Xbox titles to competitors like Sony and Nintendo.
A New Direction
Sharma aims to win back the loyalty of Xbox's core fans. In an email to staff, she expressed her commitment to those who have supported Xbox for 25 years and to the developers creating expansive gaming experiences. “We will celebrate our roots with a renewed commitment to Xbox starting with console, which has shaped who we are,” she stated.
Sharma’s Experience and Achievements
Before her return to Microsoft, Sharma played a pivotal role in Instacart's IPO and profitability strategies and held various product leadership roles at Meta. Her early career at Microsoft included two years in marketing.
Industry Challenges
Despite efforts to diversify, Xbox has faced significant challenges in the past decade. Spencer noted that the Xbox One generation struggled greatly, and sales have stagnated since then.
Microsoft's attempts to bolster its GamePass subscription service by including top titles have not yielded the expected results, leading to slower growth and a 50% increase in subscription prices. Meanwhile, CFO Amy Hood has pressured the division to enhance profitability, with recent initiatives focusing on achieving 30% accountability margins.
Sharma has also led initiatives in AI, responding quickly to market changes, such as the rise of China’s DeepSeek model. Her leadership will be crucial as Microsoft navigates the challenges ahead in the gaming landscape. To stay updated on developments, visit Inside Ticker.
